The benefits of sound are numerous and diverse mentally and physically. Although many may think this is something new, it is not. Indigeneous societies from all around the world have used sound for healing in ceremonies since the days of antiquity. Sound therapy varies but however it is received it all includes sound waves and harmonic vibrations to the body.
Sound facilitates shifts in our brainwaves by using what is called entrainment. Entrainment is what sychronizes our brainwaves, that are already fluctuating into a stable frequency. Therefore, when our brainwaves are in sync by using rhythm and frequency we can train our brainwaves to entrain so we can shift our states of consciousness. When that becomes possible, we can shift out of our normal waking state of consciousness (beta) to a more relaxed state (alpha).
Dr. Marlynn Wei states in Psychology Today magazine that "Science is still catching up to understand how sound heals, but the current research is promising." She goes on to say that one of many theories for it's success is due to the concept of "binaural beats" or "brain entrainment" that synchronizes and changes brainwaves.
